The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has called on the Ministry of Tourism and its affiliated agencies to prioritize unity and inclusivity to secure the future of the country’s tourism sector.
In a statement issued yesterday (Saturday, August 24), FTAN’s National President, Mr. Nkereuwem Onung, emphasized the urgency of this appeal, citing recent developments within Nigeria’s tourism industry that have raised concerns about potential disruptions to its cohesion and growth.
Onung highlighted troubling trends, such as the increasing involvement of external entities like the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in the private sector, noting that this shift away from collaboration with established industry bodies like FTAN undermines the cooperative spirit that is vital for the sector’s success.
He underscored the importance of unity, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 World Travel Market (WTM), a global event that offers Nigerian tourism operators a significant opportunity to build business relationships, engage with international counterparts, and promote Nigeria’s rich cultural and natural attractions.
FTAN stressed that it is crucial for the Ministry of Tourism to support FTAN’s leadership and work through established industry channels to ensure a cohesive approach.
Onung also expressed concern over the recent decision to designate Akwa Ibom as the host of World Tourism Day (WTD), pointing out that while the initiative is commendable, the lack of clear and actionable planning could reduce the event’s potential impact.
He emphasized that effective organization and thorough preparation are essential to maximize the benefits of such high-profile events. Onung urged the ministry and its agencies to adopt a more inclusive and transparent decision-making process, engaging FTAN and other stakeholders in developing a unified strategy to strengthen and enhance Nigeria’s tourism sector.
“Unity and collaboration are essential for advancing Nigeria’s tourism industry,” Onung said. “By respecting the roles of established industry bodies and fostering a more inclusive approach, Nigeria can enhance its global tourism profile and fully leverage its diverse attractions.”
He reaffirmed FTAN’s commitment to working collaboratively with the ministry to ensure Nigeria’s tourism sector thrives on the global stage, advising the ministry to recalibrate its approach, embrace FTAN’s leadership, actively participate in international events like WTM, and ensure comprehensive preparation for events like WTD to build a stronger and more prosperous industry.
