Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, has indefinitely banned final-year students from holding “signing off” celebrations following their examinations, effective immediately as of August 19, 2025. The directive, announced in a statement by Registrar Dr. Chinenye Okeke, cites recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption of academic activities as the primary reasons. These celebrations, often involving boisterous parades and the presence of unauthorized individuals on campus, have been deemed a threat to the safety of students and staff. Okeke stated, “This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events,” emphasizing the university’s commitment to a secure academic environment.
The ban prohibits all forms of post-exam festivities, including the traditional signing of shirts and other celebratory activities, with strict disciplinary measures like rustication for students who violate the rule. Outsiders joining such events risk arrest and prosecution for breaching campus peace, according to the statement. The decision aligns with similar moves by other Nigerian institutions, such as Federal University of Lafia and Taraba State University, which banned sign-out celebrations due to safety concerns.
