Ukraine and Russia are convening in Istanbul for their second round of direct peace talks since 2022. This meeting follows a significant escalation in the conflict, marked by Ukraine’s extensive drone attacks on Russian airbases.
Yesterday, Ukraine executed “Operation Spider’s Web,” a coordinated drone assault targeting multiple Russian military airbases, including those in Siberia. The operation reportedly destroyed or damaged over 40 Russian aircraft, including strategic bombers like the Tu-95 and Tu-22, which are capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) orchestrated this attack over 18 months, utilizing drones smuggled into Russia and concealed in civilian areas. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the operation for its significant impact on Russian military assets.
Despite the heightened tensions, both nations have dispatched delegations to Istanbul for peace negotiations. Ukraine’s delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, aims to present a proposed roadmap for a lasting peace settlement. The plan includes an initial 30-day full ceasefire, mutual return of prisoners and Ukrainian children taken to Russian-controlled areas, followed by a summit between Presidents Zelenskyy and Putin. Ukraine’s terms also emphasize maintaining its military strength, rejecting recognition of Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territory, and requiring reparations.
Russia, represented by presidential adviser Vladimir Medinsky, has yet to publicly disclose its negotiation proposals. Ukrainian officials express skepticism about Russia’s commitment to the talks, noting that Moscow has not provided its negotiation proposals in advance.
The outcome of these talks remains uncertain, especially in light of the recent military escalations, however, both sides have reiterated their respective positions.
