In an executive action following the 2026 midterm elections, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation inside the West Wing designating the Oval Office and the adjacent Cabinet Room as national monuments.

The signing ceremony took place on the afternoon of Thursday, November 5, 2026, inside the Oval Office.

Addressing reporters and administration aides alongside members of the White House press corps, President Trump stated that the historic designation was designed to permanently preserve his recent structural and decorative modifications to the spaces and prevent future chief executives from altering them.

”It will make it impossible for anybody ever to destroy this incredible space,” President Trump told reporters, gesturing to the newly added gold-framed portraits, wall appliqués, and chandeliers. “It will not be allowed to be touched by anybody, destroyed, ripped down by stupid people… We like the Oval Office, and it’s a symbol, like the White House itself.”

While the White House complex as a whole is already designated a National Historic Landmark subject to federal preservation protocols, President Trump invoked presidential authority under federal preservation provisions to single out the Oval Office and Cabinet Room as individually protected sites.

He asserted that the classification overrides standard presidential authority to redecorate or alter the West Wing interior.

The action follows several major infrastructure initiatives undertaken by the administration, including the ongoing construction of a new White House ballroom, the repaving of the Rose Garden, and plans for a 250-foot triumphal arch nearby.

Legal scholars and congressional leaders immediately raised questions regarding the legal enforceability of using national monument status to bind future executive administrations from redecorating interior workspace rooms within the White House complex.
