U.S. President Donald Trump attributed a sharp single-day decline on Wall Street to the opposition Democratic Party’s gains following Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Taking to his Truth Social platform after markets closed on Thursday evening, President Trump placed the responsibility for the financial volatility squarely on opposition lawmakers.

In his post, the President lamented the downturn, stating that the market suffered a major slump based on the election results and targeting opposition voters by asserting that retirement accounts took a hit as a direct consequence of their ballots.

Trump later reiterated these concerns from the White House, arguing that investors reacted negatively to early projections indicating shifting political control on Capitol Hill.

The market turmoil played out extensively across major financial exchanges throughout Thursday’s trading session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed more than 1,800 points, while the broader S&P 500 index retreated 4.36%.

Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite logged its sharpest single-session percentage drop since April 2025, driven primarily by widespread retreats in technology and artificial intelligence equities.

At the White House, Deputy Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reinforced the administration’s stance during a briefing in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, contending that the market swings reflected investor anxiety over anticipated policy shifts under an expanded Democratic presence in Congress.

Democratic leadership moved quickly to push back against the White House narrative. Speaking from Capitol Hill, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries dismissed the President’s accusations, arguing that broader macroeconomic indicators drove the market recalibration rather than the election outcomes, and accused the administration of using market volatility to distract from the voters’ choices.

Independent market analysts offered another perspective, noting that the retreat was heavily tied to specific industry concerns.

Wall Street observers pointed out that voter pushback against regional artificial intelligence data center developments became a central issue during the campaign, leading investors to re-evaluate tech valuations amid expectations of tighter local regulations and permitting delays under newly elected officials.
