A dark cloud of grief has descended on Adamawa State following a tragic road accident along the busy Yola–Mubi highway that claimed the lives of four members of the National Youth Service Corps and a soldier.
The fatal crash, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, has thrown families, colleagues and residents into mourning, once again raising concerns over road safety and the increasing number of deadly accidents involving heavy-duty and military vehicles on Nigerian highways.
The accident reportedly happened at about 1:50 pm around the Narehi axis of the Girei/Song Local Government Area, a route widely known for heavy vehicular movement connecting several communities in Adamawa State.
According to the Adamawa State Police Command, the crash involved a military gun truck travelling from Gombi towards Yola and a commercial Hummer bus heading in the opposite direction from Yola to Mubi with five passengers on board.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the incident in an official statement released on Thursday.
He explained that preliminary investigations indicated that both vehicles collided head-on, leading to a devastating impact that caused the commercial bus to overturn before it was engulfed in flames.
“The unfortunate incident involved a military Gun truck travelling from Gombi towards Yola and a commercial Hummer bus conveying five passengers from Yola to Mubi,” the statement read.
“Preliminary findings reveal that both vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, resulting in the commercial bus flipping over and bursting into flames.”
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, saying the collision created panic among motorists and residents nearby who rushed to the area in an attempt to rescue trapped passengers.
According to locals, thick smoke billowed into the sky as the bus burned intensely, making rescue efforts extremely difficult. Some residents reportedly attempted to extinguish the flames using sand and water before emergency responders arrived, but the fire had already consumed much of the vehicle.
Sources said the victims suffered severe burns, while others died instantly from the impact of the collision.
The four corps members who lost their lives were said to be travelling for official and personal engagements, although authorities have yet to release their identities pending notification of their families.
The death of the young graduates serving under the National Youth Service Corps scheme has sparked emotional reactions across social media, with many Nigerians lamenting the dangers corps members face during interstate travel.
The deceased soldier was reportedly among personnel inside the military truck at the time of the crash. Some other individuals involved in the accident sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Security agencies and emergency officials later arrived at the scene to evacuate victims and clear the wreckage to restore traffic flow along the highway, which was temporarily disrupted following the incident.
Residents of the area noted that the Yola–Mubi road has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent years due to reckless driving, speeding and dangerous overtaking by motorists.
Community leaders have repeatedly appealed to authorities to intensify road safety enforcement measures and improve emergency response systems along the highway to reduce casualties during accidents.
The latest tragedy has also renewed conversations about the safety of corps members posted to various parts of the country. Many Nigerians have continued to call on relevant authorities to strengthen transportation safety measures for young graduates participating in the mandatory national service programme.
Friends and colleagues of the deceased corps members were said to have been devastated upon receiving news of the accident. In several orientation camps and lodges across Adamawa State, mourners gathered in tears as discussions about the tragedy dominated conversations.
Some corps members expressed fears over long-distance travel on poorly maintained highways, especially in areas where heavy trucks and security vehicles frequently operate.
Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Police Command assured the public that investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing.
Authorities are expected to determine whether speeding, mechanical failure or other factors contributed to the deadly collision.
The command also urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and avoid reckless driving to prevent further loss of lives on the roads.
