A fatal accident occurred Friday along the Calabar-Itu Road when a 40-foot container veered off its track and landed on a 16-seater passenger bus traveling to Calabar.
Eyewitnesses at the scene blamed the tragedy on the poor state of the Calabar-Itu highway, which has long been a source of concern for motorists and residents due to its deteriorated condition, gaping potholes, and erosion-ridden sections.
The impact of the crash left the bus completely mangled, trapping several passengers inside. Emergency responders and local volunteers worked frantically to recover the bodies and provide assistance.
As of press time, the bodies of the victims had been moved to a nearby hospital. However, authorities are yet to confirm the total number of casualties.
