After eight years of absence, Lagos is set to witness the return of the iconic Eyo Festival, with preparations in top gear for the historic cultural celebration scheduled to hold at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos.
The epochal festival is being organised in honour of the late Sir Michael Otedola, a former Governor of Lagos State and respected elder statesman. The event marks the first staging of the Eyo Festival since May 20, 2017, when it was last held.
The Eyo Festival, also known as the Adamu Orisha Play, is one of the most significant Yoruba cultural celebrations and is traditionally staged on Lagos Island. It is deeply rooted in the history and heritage of the indigenous people of Lagos and is usually held to honour departed Obas (kings), high chiefs, and other prominent personalities.
Characterised by the iconic white-robed masquerades known as “Eyo,” the festival features a colourful procession through major streets, traditional rites, music, and ceremonial displays that attract thousands of spectators, including tourists from within and outside Nigeria.
The return of the festival after nearly a decade has generated excitement among culture enthusiasts and residents, who view it as a reaffirmation of Lagos’ rich cultural identity and enduring traditions. Organisers say the event will not only pay tribute to the legacy of Sir Michael Otedola but also promote cultural tourism and preserve Yoruba heritage for future generations.
With all arrangements reportedly in place, Lagos is poised to once again come alive with pageantry, tradition, and history as the revered Eyo Festival makes its long-awaited comeback.
