Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared his withdrawal from all prior agreements within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The decision was based on repeated violations of trust and acts of internal disruption perpetrated by prominent members of the party.
In a detailed statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account yesterday, Wike detailed specific incidents and choices that caused him to lose faith in the party’s leaders. He highlighted the party’s descent into instability following the 2023 general elections, stating that the PDP has been “swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another,” primarily due to a lack of trust and integrity among its leadership.
Wike recounted a meeting of the G5 in Lagos where he issued a direct accusation at Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, declaring: “I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, HE. Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems,” adding that “non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and that he was the chief culprit of this anomaly.” Despite a decision at the meeting to “bury the hatchet and make progress,” Wike claimed Makinde continued to act in ways that undermined party unity.
According to Wike, even before the implementation of resolutions reached at a follow-up meeting in Abuja, “the gentleman’s agreement we reached at Saraki’s Guest House was already being crudely violated.” He alleged that Seyi Makinde had connived with Peter Mba of Enugu State to orchestrate the summoning of the meeting of so-called South-East leaders, a meeting that threatened to destabilize the PDP if Ude Okoye was not adopted as National Secretary. “I have since granted an interview to the effect that, that resolution… can not hold” Wike remarked.
He further accused Makinde of instigating internal manipulation at the party’s national level: “Seyi Makinde organized some people in the National Secretariat to insist that the Deputy National Secretary should act as National Secretary, in violation of the agreement earlier reached.” Wike described the resulting actions – including a letter by the Deputy National Secretary calling for a NEC meeting and a public rebuttal of the Anambra gubernatorial candidate’s confirmation letter – as “a farce” and “complete violation of the agreements reached.” Wike called these events undeniably distasteful, provocative and annoying, to say the least
Wike also criticized actions taken by the Deputy National Secretary and the National Publicity Secretary, alleging they acted on the orders of Makinde and Mbah, further violating the agreements. He cited the incident on May 24 in Jos, where a zonal elective congress was aborted due to procedural irregularities stemming from these violations.
Concluding his post, Wike emphasized his longstanding commitment to the PDP since 1998 and highlighted his contributions to the party’s success. He expressed regret over the betrayal by those he had supported and declared his decision to withdraw from all previous agreements, vowing to continue the struggle for justice within the party.
