The Supreme Court’s intervention in the SDP and PDP leadership crises is a defining moment for Nigerian politics as we head into the 2027 election cycle. These rulings have effectively hit the “reset button” for both parties, though the immediate fallout is quite chaotic.
​The Supreme Court ruling has created a massive power vacuum. The apex court nullified a previous Court of Appeal judgment that had recognized Shehu Gabam as the National Chairman.
This effectively wipes out the legal foundation for the leadership structure that INEC had been recognizing “By Court Order.”
Supporters of the Sadiq Gombe-led faction are celebrating this as a victory for party internal democracy, while the Gabam faction is facing a “digital and physical lockout” from party activities. There are already reports of heightened security at the SDP national secretariat to prevent clashes between rival factions.
​The PDP’s situation is even more precarious because of the tight timeline for 2027 primaries. Following a split 3-2 decision, the Supreme Court voided the Ibadan Convention (November 2025), which had produced the Kabiru Turaki-led leadership. The court ruled that the convention was held in flagrant “disobedience of existing court orders.”
To prevent a total collapse, the Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has taken temporary administrative control. This is a rare constitutional “survival mode” for the party.
While the BoT tries to stabilize the party, the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike is reportedly proceeding with its own parallel plans, including a scheduled primary for May 25. This “two-headed” leadership is causing massive anxiety for aspirants who fear their nominations might eventually be voided by INEC.
Under the 2026 Electoral Act, parties must conclude primaries by May 30, 2026. With both the SDP and PDP in legal limbo just days before the deadline, there is a very real possibility that one or both parties may struggle to field valid candidates for certain positions.
We are seeing a “social media exodus,” with PDP and SDP members openly discussing moving to the ADC or APC to secure their political futures before the window closes.
With the BoT in charge of the PDP and the SDP leadership in a legal “black hole,” the 2027 race is looking less like a three-horse race and more like a battle for survival within the opposition.
