EXCERPTS
“As part of the effects of the Usman Danfodio’s Jihad on Southern Zaria territory, there was a series of protests by the Katab and Kaje against the appointment of Hausa/Fulani District Heads to rule over them by the Zazzau Emirate.
“Unfortunately, right from 1907 when the first set of Muslim Hausa/Fulani rulers were posted into the Southern Zaria territory as District Heads and other Native Authority (NA) Officers, there had been continuous agitation and protests from the Southern Zaria people against the subjugation.
“Some of these protests took place in 1946, 1948, 1966, 1968 and much later in 1992.
“In 1968 the largest ever human rights revolt to demand the appointment of Indigenous District Heads occurred when the Katab, Kaje, Tsam (Chawai), Ikulu, and Anghan came together in a mass protest rally.
“Many were mowed down to their early graves, several were arrested to prisons in Zaria, a lot never came back alive. The lucky among the women raided for human labour were used as sex slaves.
“One Mr. Usman Sakwak had already begun his struggle to have an indigen appointed as District Head, a struggle for which he fought to the end of his life.
“The Chief of Kagoro Mallam Gwamna Awan is the one instigating the Katafawa to revolt against the Katuka, the Hausa District Head of Zangon Kataf.” – Mr. Clewley, Asst. District Officer  (ADO) in Zaria (1947).
