A deep sense of grief and indignation has engulfed Sokoto State following the deadly boat accident at Gorau Village in Goronyo Local Government Area, where the confirmed death toll has climbed to 65. Local emergency officials confirmed that only 11 passengers have been rescued alive from the waters as search operations continue.
The overloaded wooden vessel, which was carrying over 70 passengers, mostly local farmers, traders, and young families traveling across the river, capsized in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, 2026. The passengers were heading toward the weekly market at a neighboring settlement when the craft capsized mid-journey due to strong currents and engine failure.
Rescue teams comprising local divers, fishermen, and officers from the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have worked tirelessly around the clock to recover bodies from the river stretch connecting Gorau and neighboring riverine communities. ”We heard screaming from the middle of the river around 6:30 AM on Thursday,” said Sanusi Abubakar, a local fisherman who participated in the initial rescue attempt.
“By the time we pulled our canoes into the water, dozens of people were already struggling in the current. We managed to pull 11 people out, but the water was moving too fast.” Speaking at a press briefing at the Goronyo Local Government Headquarters on Friday afternoon, the Public Relations Officer for the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, Mallam Aminu Umar, provided an update on the search and rescue efforts.
“As of Friday morning, search teams have recovered a total of 65 bodies from the river,” Umar stated. “Only 11 survivors have been accounted for, and they are currently receiving medical treatment at the Goronyo General Hospital. Search operations will continue along the downstream banks until every missing person is accounted for.”
The escalating tragedy has sparked sharp criticism across the region regarding the lack of water safety enforcement, such as mandatory life jackets and strict limits on passenger capacity. Local community leaders at Gorau Village expressed frustration, noting that similar incidents have repeatedly occurred along the waterway without meaningful regulatory intervention.
In a statement released late Friday evening, the Sokoto State Police Command Spokesperson, ASP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the disaster has officially commenced. ”The Command has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Gorau Village boat mishap,” Rufai said.
“Operators who violate safety protocols, overload vessels, or navigate treacherous waters without life-saving equipment will face the full weight of the law.” Mass burials for the victims were conducted on Friday evening in accordance with Islamic rites, with local government officials, community elders, and grieving relatives present to pay their final respects.
