Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has voiced serious concerns regarding the ongoing internal crises within the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and the potential long-term repercussions, warning that the unresolved leadership conflict threatens the very survival of the PDP, with the risk of driving Nigeria towards a one-party system, monopolized by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Shaibu, certain members within the PDP are allegedly working covertly in collaboration with the ruling APC.
These individuals, Shaibu said, have hidden agenda that aim to destabilize the PDP from within, weakening the opposition and paving the way for a dominant APC-led one-party state in Nigeria.
He cautioned the PDP against letting such elements have their way, saying the PDP could face serious consequences if these divisive forces are allowed to succeed.
“If this leadership issue remains unresolved,” Shaibu warned, “and if those collaborating with the APC are allowed to achieve their objective, Nigeria will inevitably become a one-party state.”
He pointed to a particular faction within the PDP, describing them as agents of the APC who, despite openly boasting about their allegiance to the ruling party, still remain entrenched within the PDP.
“What can you expect,” he questioned, “when some members proudly proclaim their loyalty to the APC while continuing to operate within our ranks?”
Shaibu emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stressing that the PDP must either take action to stop these internal saboteurs or face the risk of political extinction. “It’s a clear choice,” he stated. “Either we let them destroy the party and allow Nigeria to become a one-party state, or we take decisive steps to stop them and save the PDP.”
He went on to elaborate that the destabilization efforts are being driven by individuals who are paid to serve particular interests. “Those behind this crisis are not acting out of principle; they are working for their financial backers,” Shaibu explained. “These agents are playing both sides – serving their personal interests while pretending to be loyal to the PDP. But you can’t serve two masters. This group has been at work since the last election, and their actions continue without restraint.”
Shaibu further alleged that the motives behind the ongoing crisis are connected to personal gains and political survival.
“Instead of focusing on governance,” he said, “these individuals are already positioning themselves for 2027. Their goal is to keep the crisis alive, so they remain politically relevant. They want to ensure that those who have pending cases with security agencies and the financial crimes commission remain untouched and continue to operate freely.”
Shaibu warned that the continuous infighting within the PDP could only serve to weaken the party further, making it impossible to achieve any meaningful results.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand,” he asserted, urging the PDP leadership to address the crisis before it is too late.
