Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, takes the name Pope Leo XIV
The Catholic Church has a new Supreme Pontiff. He is American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who took the name Pope Leo XIV
He is the 267th successor to the seat of Saint Peter, the leading apostle and solid rock on which Jesus Christ built his earthly church.
He is the first American to be elected Pope and the fourth successive non Italian Pope in recent years. Indeed,
the emergence of Pope Leo XIV, an American, continues the pattern of a non Italian Pope 44 years after the last Italian Pope John Paul 1 reigned. He, in turn, succeeded another Italian Pope Paul VI.
It is noteworthy that since the Polish born Pope John Paul 11 emerged in 1981, the church has been blessed with the German Pope Benedict XVI and the Argentinian Pope Francis.
