The Nigerian Senate on Thursday issued a firm directive to security agencies to immediately launch coordinated rescue operations for no fewer than 15 passengers abducted by suspected sea pirates along the Calabar–Oron waterways, raising fresh concerns over the growing insecurity in the country’s coastal corridors.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Senator Ekong Sampson, who decried the brazen hijacking of a commercial ferry traveling from Calabar to Oron last Friday.
Presenting the motion before lawmakers, Sampson described the incident as both alarming and unacceptable, noting that the victims were ambushed mid-journey by heavily armed pirates who forcefully took control of the vessel. He revealed that among those abducted were young Nigerians reportedly preparing to sit for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, a development that has heightened public outrage and anxiety.
According to the senator, the attackers struck without warning, brandishing weapons and overpowering both crew members and passengers before whisking away their captives to an unknown destination. He warned that the increasing frequency of such attacks along the Calabar–Oron axis threatens not only lives but also commerce and mobility in the region.
“This is a tragic and deeply troubling development,” Sampson said. “The waterways between Calabar and Oron are vital economic routes, and the safety of citizens who depend on them must be guaranteed. The abduction of innocent passengers, especially young students preparing for critical national examinations, is a matter that demands immediate and decisive action.”
In response, the Senate unanimously adopted the motion, calling on the Nigerian Navy, Marine Police, and other relevant security agencies to intensify surveillance and deploy all necessary resources to ensure the safe and swift rescue of the victims. Lawmakers emphasized the need for inter-agency collaboration, stressing that fragmented efforts would be insufficient in tackling the sophisticated operations of maritime criminal networks.
The Senate also urged security authorities to increase patrols along the affected waterways and establish permanent security presence in identified hotspots to deter future attacks. In addition, lawmakers called for a comprehensive review of maritime security strategies, including the use of modern technology such as tracking systems and rapid-response units.
Several senators who contributed to the debate expressed deep concern over what they described as a resurgence of piracy and criminality in Nigeria’s inland waterways. They noted that while attention has often focused on land-based insecurity, maritime routes—particularly in the Niger Delta and coastal regions—have increasingly become vulnerable.
One lawmaker pointed out that the Calabar–Oron waterway serves as a critical link between Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, facilitating trade, transportation, and social interaction. Any sustained threat to its safety, he warned, could have far-reaching economic and social consequences.
Beyond the immediate rescue efforts, the Senate called on the federal government to address the root causes of maritime insecurity, including unemployment, weak enforcement mechanisms, and inadequate infrastructure in coastal communities. Lawmakers stressed that a long-term solution must combine security interventions with socio-economic development.
Meanwhile, families of the abducted passengers have reportedly been thrown into distress, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. Community leaders and civil society groups have also joined calls for urgent action, urging authorities not to allow the case to fade without resolution.
Security analysts say the incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen intelligence gathering and response capabilities across Nigeria’s waterways, which remain difficult to police due to their vastness and complex terrain.
As pressure mounts on security agencies to deliver results, the Senate reiterated its commitment to oversight, vowing to monitor the situation closely until all victims are safely rescued and those responsible are brought to justice.
For now, the nation watches and waits, hoping for a swift and successful outcome to what has become yet another painful reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s security landscape.
