The Senate on Thursday, October 15, 2026, ordered a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu, Enugu State.

The directive followed a motion of urgent public importance brought before the upper legislative chamber during morning plenary at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East.

Daniel, a first-class graduate and immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University, died on Sunday, October 11, 2026, while undergoing the mandatory three-week orientation exercise.

According to account statements cited on the floor and in a press release issued by Akinteye Afeez, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Daniel had reported to the camp clinic complaining of a headache. His health rapidly deteriorated after he was administered medication that a consulting doctor later alleged was ineffective or counterfeit.

Afeez noted that as Daniel’s condition worsened, requests for an immediate medical referral to an off-site hospital were delayed by camp administrators until approval came too late, resulting in his death before or shortly after arriving at a secondary health facility in Enugu.

Presenting the motion, Senator Bassey lamented that Daniel’s premature death had thrown his family, the academic community, and the people of Akwa Ibom State into deep mourning, urging parliament to ensure accountability. The motion was formally seconded by the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (Borno North).

Contributing to the debate, Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) expressed condolences to the bereaved family and warned against treating the loss of young graduates on national service as routine occurrences.

Ningi called on the investigating committees to produce actionable recommendations that would permanently address emergency healthcare deficiencies across all orientation camps.

Presiding over the session, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin directed the Senate Committees on Youth Development and Health to conduct a joint inquiry into the incident and submit a comprehensive report with findings and policy recommendations within two weeks.

Following the floor debate, lawmakers observed a minute of silence in memory of the deceased corps member.

The mandated legislative probe will focus on reconstructing the precise timeline of medical intervention provided to Daniel at the Awgu camp clinic. Investigating allegations surrounding the supply and dispensing of sub-standard or fake pharmaceuticals within orientation clinics nationwide.

The probe will also focus on evaluating emergency response capabilities, referral approval protocols, and ambulance services across all 37 NYSC orientation camps in Nigeria.
