The United States Mission in Nigeria has strongly warned Nigerian travelers to strictly adhere to the terms and conditions of their visas, emphasizing that any form of visa abuse or overstay will face severe consequences.
​The warning was issued by the U.S. Consul General during a briefing on consular services and visa processing updates. The Mission noted that while the United States remains committed to facilitating legitimate travel for education, business, and tourism, it will not tolerate the exploitation of its immigration system.
​The Mission emphasized that visa holders must strictly align their activities in the U.S. with the specific visa category they were granted.
Travelers entering on visitor visas are strictly prohibited from enrolling in schools or seeking employment while in the United States. Students must maintain full-time enrollment at their approved institutions and are not permitted to work outside authorized campus frameworks.
The Mission reminded travelers that the duration of stay permitted at the port of entry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is final and must not be exceeded.
​The U.S. Mission made it clear that failing to comply with these regulations carries long-term penalties that could permanently disrupt future travel plans.
​”Honoring the terms of your visa is not optional; it is a legal requirement,” the Mission stated. “Those who overstay or violate their visa terms risk immediate cancellation of their current visas, potential deportation, and long-term or permanent bans from re-entering the United States.”
​The Mission also highlighted that high rates of visa abuse by a fraction of applicants negatively impact the overall visa issuance process for other legitimate Nigerian travelers, leading to stricter scrutiny during interviews. Prospective travelers were urged to be honest about their intentions during interviews and to respect U.S. immigration laws upon arrival.
