The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, have criticized the Senate over its handling of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resumption following her recent legal victory.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, had been declared the duly elected senator by the appellate court after a protracted electoral battle. However, controversy has trailed her attempts to resume legislative duties, with the Senate leadership accused of dragging its feet on her swearing-in.
In separate statements on Tuesday, both the NLC and Afenifere described the Senate’s posture as undemocratic and a dangerous precedent that undermines the rule of law.
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the delay in recognizing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s mandate was “a brazen disregard for judicial authority,” stressing that court rulings must be respected by all institutions.
“Any attempt to obstruct a duly elected lawmaker from resuming office after the courts have spoken is nothing short of legislative impunity. The Senate must rise above partisanship and do the right thing,” Ajaero said.
Similarly, Afenifere’s spokesperson, Jare Ajayi, urged the Senate to avoid actions capable of deepening public mistrust in democratic institutions.
“Democracy thrives on respect for due process. Once the judiciary has made its pronouncement, it is binding. Refusing Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan her rightful place in the chamber amounts to contempt for the constitution,” Ajayi stated.
Both groups called on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to ensure immediate compliance with the court’s directive and allow the senator to resume without further delay.
Political analysts note that the matter has generated nationwide debate, with civil society groups warning that obstructing judicial rulings in legislative matters could erode Nigeria’s democratic gains.
As of press time, the Senate leadership has not issued a fresh statement on the matter, though insiders suggest consultations are ongoing among principal officers.
