Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed that security remains the bedrock of every prosperous society, stressing that lasting peace and stability are essential for sustainable development and national progress.

The governor made the remarks on Sunday during the gala night held to mark the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 in Port Harcourt.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dagogo Wokoma, Fubara commended the Nigerian Army for its steadfast commitment to defending the country’s territorial integrity and maintaining peace and security across the nation.

Addressing military officers, dignitaries and guests at the event, the governor said no society can achieve meaningful economic growth or social development without a secure environment that guarantees the safety of lives and property.

According to him, security remains the vital foundation upon which prosperous societies are built, noting that citizens are able to pursue their daily activities and contribute to national development because of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces.

“As everyone knows, security remains the vital foundation of any prosperous society, and a nation sleeps in peace because brave men and women stand awake in its defence,” the governor said.

Fubara observed that the dedication, professionalism and courage displayed by officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army have continued to play a significant role in preserving national unity and confronting various security challenges facing the country.

He acknowledged the difficult conditions under which military personnel operate, noting that they often place themselves in harm’s way to ensure the safety of millions of Nigerians.

The governor said their commitment deserves the gratitude and support of all citizens, describing members of the armed forces as true patriots who have consistently demonstrated loyalty to the nation.

He also paid glowing tribute to fallen military personnel who lost their lives while defending Nigeria, describing their sacrifices as priceless contributions to the country’s unity, peace and democratic development.

“We honour those who have paid the ultimate price and stand in solidarity with the families they left behind. Their sacrifices continue to preserve our nation’s unity, protect our territorial integrity, and sustain our democracy,” he stated.

Fubara expressed sympathy with the families of deceased service members, assuring them that the sacrifices of their loved ones would never be forgotten.

He said the courage displayed by the fallen heroes continues to inspire confidence in the nation’s armed forces and serves as a reminder of the enormous price often paid in the defence of peace and freedom.

The governor further emphasized the need for continued collaboration between security agencies, governments at all levels and local communities in addressing emerging security threats.

According to him, effective security requires not only military strength but also intelligence sharing, public cooperation and sustained investment in institutions that promote peace and stability.

He reiterated the Rivers State Government’s commitment to supporting security agencies operating within the state, noting that peace remains critical to attracting investments, creating jobs and improving the welfare of citizens.

Fubara stated that the administration would continue to partner with relevant security institutions to ensure that Rivers State remains safe for residents, businesses and investors.

He praised the leadership of the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and resilience in responding to security challenges across different parts of the country, expressing confidence that the military would continue to uphold its constitutional responsibility of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The governor also encouraged officers and soldiers to remain steadfast in carrying out their duties despite the challenges associated with military service.

He urged Nigerians to appreciate the sacrifices made daily by members of the armed forces and other security agencies, stressing that national security is a shared responsibility requiring the cooperation of every citizen.

The annual Nigerian Army Day Celebration provides an opportunity to honour the dedication, professionalism and achievements of military personnel while reflecting on the institution’s contributions to national security and development.

The gala night formed part of activities lined up for the 2026 celebration, bringing together military officers, government officials, traditional rulers, members of the diplomatic community and other distinguished guests to celebrate the service and sacrifices of the Nigerian Army.

Fubara concluded by expressing optimism that with sustained support for the armed forces and stronger cooperation among all stakeholders, Nigeria would continue to make progress in overcoming security challenges and building a more peaceful, united and prosperous nation.
