President Bola Tinubu’s commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) headquarters on April 2026, officially cements the transition from the old Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to a more centralized, modernized tax authority.
​The President’s defense of these reforms highlights a “break from the past,” specifically targeting the inefficiencies of colonial-era frameworks that he argues have long hindered the country’s economic potential.
​The event was more than just a ribbon-cutting; it was a policy statement on the future of Nigerian revenue. A massive 16-storey edifice in Abuja’s Central Business District, consisting of three towers designed to house over 3,000 personnel.
Tinubu argued that legacy tax laws were fragmented and inconsistent, leading to “multiple taxation” that impoverished citizens and stifled businesses. He framed the new system as a shift toward “prosperity and inclusivity.”
This marks the operational peak of the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025, which officially saw the FIRS dissolve into the NRS on January 1, 2026.
​The shift to the NRS isn’t just a rebranding; it’s a structural overhaul intended to boost Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio (aiming for 18%).
The NRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, noted during the ceremony that the agency’s collections have seen a massive jump from N6.8 trillion five years ago to N28.7 trillion by the end of 2025 arguing that this growth proves the efficacy of the ongoing structural reset.
