The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State has called on the state government to guarantee a level playing field for all political parties and protect opposition members from politically motivated violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The demand was voiced by the ADC governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Ocho Obodoeze Chukwuma, during an address to journalists in Enugu following a press briefing and award ceremony hosted by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel.
The ADC candidate strongly condemned recent disruptions and violent attacks targeted at opposition groups across the state. Pointing to a shooting incident on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in which an opposition supporter, Ifeanyi Christopher Nworie, sustained fatal gunshot injuries during an attack on campaign offices, Obodoeze warned that the escalating use of firearms threatens public safety and democratic participation in Enugu State.
Highlighting the need for a transparent democratic process, Obodoeze urged law enforcement agencies and the Enugu State Government to uphold neutrality and refrain from muzzling opposition parties.
He emphasized that all political organizations must be permitted to campaign freely without intimidation, in strict alignment with the Electoral Act and the guidelines established by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
”The government should desist from muzzling opposition parties,” Obodoeze stated. “Instead, they should allow them to campaign freely like the ruling party… Election is not a do-or-die affair. The will of the people must be allowed to prevail.”
In response to the allegations, the Enugu State Government denied any involvement in political attacks or the intimidation of opposition figures, insisting that all political parties remain free to assemble, campaign, and constructively evaluate the administration of Governor Peter Mbah.
