The Katsina State Police Command has successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt and rescued nine passengers after suspected armed bandits attacked a commercial vehicle along the Katsina–Kankara highway, in what authorities described as a swift and coordinated security operation.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, highlights the persistent security challenges facing parts of Katsina State while also underscoring the efforts of security agencies to combat criminal activities on major roads frequently targeted by bandits.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, who detailed how police operatives responded promptly after receiving information about the attack. According to the statement, the attempted abduction took place at approximately 2:30 p.m. along the Katsina–Kankara Road near Tashar Kanya Village in Kankara Local Government Area.
The attackers, believed to be armed bandits, reportedly blocked the highway and intercepted a red Volkswagen Golf III saloon vehicle bearing registration number KMC 400 MK. The vehicle was being driven by a 40-year-old man identified as Aliyu, popularly known as “Maitakabari.” He was transporting 11 passengers from Dandume Local Government Area to Katsina when the criminals struck.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the armed men emerged suddenly and forced the vehicle to stop, creating panic among the occupants. Such attacks have become a recurring threat along some highways in the North-West region, where bandits often target travelers for kidnapping and ransom demands.
However, in this instance, the criminals’ plans were disrupted by the rapid intervention of security personnel. DSP Sadiq stated that immediately the police received information about the attack, the Divisional Police Officer of Kankara Division mobilised a team of operatives to the scene.
The response team included officers from the division as well as personnel from the specialised Violent Crime Rescue Unit, known as the VCRU, which was deployed to assist in confronting the attackers and rescuing the victims. “Upon receiving the information, the DPO Kankara mobilised a team of police operatives, including the Violent Crime Rescue Unit (VCRU), to the scene,” the statement said.
The police team reportedly engaged in an intensive operation that forced the suspected bandits to abandon their mission. Faced with mounting pressure from the advancing security personnel, the criminals fled into nearby bushes and forested areas, leaving behind some of the victims they had attempted to abduct.
As a result of the operation, nine passengers were successfully rescued and brought to safety. The rescued victims were said to be in stable condition following the traumatic experience. Authorities immediately commenced efforts to provide assistance and gather information that could aid further investigations into the attack.
While the operation resulted in the rescue of nine victims, security agencies are reportedly working to determine the whereabouts of the remaining passengers and ensure that everyone involved receives the necessary support. The police command praised the courage and professionalism of the officers involved in the rescue mission, noting that their quick reaction prevented what could have become a major kidnapping incident.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents and travelers across the state, particularly on roads that have experienced security threats in recent years. Katsina State has remained one of the areas most affected by banditry in Nigeria’s North-West region. Armed groups frequently attack villages, rustle livestock, kidnap residents, and target motorists traveling between communities.
In response, security agencies have intensified patrols, surveillance operations, and intelligence-gathering efforts aimed at disrupting criminal networks operating across the state. Residents and travelers have repeatedly called for increased security presence along major highways, especially routes connecting local government areas where attacks have been reported in the past.
The successful rescue operation along the Katsina–Kankara highway is being viewed by many as evidence that prompt intelligence sharing and rapid deployment of security personnel can significantly reduce the impact of criminal attacks. Police authorities urged members of the public to continue supporting security efforts by providing timely and credible information about suspicious movements and activities within their communities.
They stressed that collaboration between citizens and security agencies remains critical to winning the fight against banditry and other violent crimes.
