Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has expressed his readiness to serve as Nigeria’s Vice President in future if he can find any other person who can do the job better.
Speaking in an interview on New Central TV, which was later shared on YouTube, the former two-term Governor of Anambra State emphasized that his primary objective is to see Nigeria progress, insisting on the imperative of capable leadership emerging from the upcoming 2027 general election, to drive meaningful change in Nigeria.
When asked if he would consider the Vice Presidency, Obi responded: “I’m not desperate to be Nigeria’s president. What I am desperate for is to see Nigeria work. If I come across people who can do the job better, I would consider it (the role of Vice President).”
He also mentioned that while some have advised him not to run in 2027, he remains open to others stepping forward: “I told them, offer yourself, and we’ll evaluate everyone fairly.”
Although Obi is willing to collaborate with others, he firmly stated that he has no intention of leaving the Labour Party.
“I’m here with Labour Party, and if anyone approaches us for negotiations or coalition, they must clearly state their intentions. I’m not interested in joining anyone just to capture power or win elections. My focus is on ensuring that no child is left behind, and that we address the millions of out-of-school children,” he declared.
In the 2023 presidential race, Obi secured over 6 million votes, accounting for 25.4% of the total votes, placing him third. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election with nearly 8.8 million votes (37.6%), followed by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with approximately 7 million votes (29.9%).
