Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi has paid glowing tributes to Nigerian women on Mothers Day, hailing all mothers for their selfless sacrifices, maternal care, and immeasurable contributions to family and national development.
In a heartfelt message, Obi described Nigerian mothers as the bedrock of society, acknowledging their crucial roles in nurturing families and shaping future citizens.
“Our mothers play very critical roles in nurturing their families, shaping the minds and character of citizens, and instilling moral values in the larger society,” Obi stated.
“A day like this offers us the opportunity to express our deep gratitude for their unwavering support and priceless roles in our lives.”
Obi, however, expressed concern over the growing challenges confronting mothers, particularly in the areas of poverty, hunger, and healthcare.
He cited the 2023 UN Report on Trends in Maternal Mortality, which reveals that nearly 28.5% of global maternal deaths occur in Nigeria.
The report also disclosed that a Nigerian woman faces a 1 in 19 lifetime risk of dying during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum, compared to 1 in 4900 in the developed world.
“These statistics underscore our collective failure to invest in essential sectors such as health, education, and poverty reduction,” Obi said. “Women and mothers are among the worst affected by our country’s misplaced priorities and poor leadership,” Obi said.
He called for renewed national commitment to the welfare of mothers, stressing that their empowerment is pivotal to societal progress.
“With their unwavering support, a New Nigeria remains POssible,” he concluded.
