Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja following the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest.

Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court premises alongside supporters and members of his group carrying placards.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Mohammed Umar had on June 16 revoked the bail earlier granted to Sowore after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial. The judge subsequently granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services, Mr Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on his social media accounts.

As of the time of filing this report, proceedings had yet to commence at the court.
