Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has been officially renamed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) in a global medical reclassification aimed at better reflecting the condition’s hormonal and metabolic nature.

The Endocrine Society officially renamed it on 12 May 2026 after a 14-year global consensus process with over 50 professional societies and patient organisations.

The reclassification was introduced to better capture the hormonal, metabolic, and long-term health implications associated with the condition.

It was renamed to better reflect its multisystem nature as a complex endocrine and metabolic disorder rather than a condition defined by pathological ovarian cysts.
