Tension gripped the Mushin, Yaba, and Fadeyi areas of Lagos State on Tuesday evening, July 14, 2026, following sporadic gunshots and the alleged killing of a senior chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Toba Ijaiya.
​The violence, which broke out during the evening rush hour around 6:30 PM, sent commuters, traders, and residents scampering for safety. Eyewitnesses reported that rival transport union factions clashed openly, brandishing dangerous weapons and firing gunshots into the air along the busy Agege Motor Road and surrounding corridors.
​The unrest rapidly spread from the core of Mushin into neighboring Fadeyi and Yaba, grounding commercial activities and causing severe traffic gridlock across major arteries of the mainland.
​Local sources indicate that the violence erupted following the alleged assassination of Toba Ijaiya, a prominent figure within the Lagos State chapter of the NURTW.
​”We just started hearing rapid gunshots near the bridge, and suddenly everyone was running,” said a local trader in Fadeyi who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “The word on the street is that Ijaiya was targeted and killed, which sparked immediate retaliation from his loyalists.”
​Armed police contingents and tactical teams from the Lagos State Police Command have been deployed to the affected areas to restore order and disperse the hoodlums. While heavy security presence remains stationed at strategic junctions in Mushin and Yaba, the atmosphere in the area remains highly charged.
​As of Tuesday night, police authorities have not officially confirmed the casualty figures or the death of the union chieftain, but security patrols have been intensified to prevent further reprisal attacks.
