The Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Sheikh Daood Molasan, has explained that the Badru (Muslim) market founded in Iwo, Osun State, is aimed at easing the hardship experienced by foodstuff buyers in the hands of foodstuff associations in regular markets in the area.
Molasan said the market has gained momentum in patronage due to monitoring and the agreement with traders in the market.
“In Osun State, things are expensive, and Iwo is not left out; the rate at which traders inflate prices is too much. What we now did was register a company called Badru. We then called our members and deliberated on why things are expensive.
“We then looked for a place in our community called Darul Hijrah for them to sell their goods. Farmers can come and sell their produce directly to consumers because in the market, some powerful people will collect land fees, some will hijack the goods before they enter the market, and some will buy off the produce inside the market. This set of people will then resell at an inflated price.
“We have provided them land in line with what we call Waqfu, which means the land promised is not for us to generate income but a reward from God. We will make sure there is even measurement and price control. We’ll also make sure that in the process of ensuring price control, traders make a profit too.
“The market is owned by members of Ta’awun, and we instructed our members who are farmers to bring their produce here so that people will be able to purchase it at a controlled price.
“On the first day few people came; on the second market day we had 10 times as many people compared to the first day, and today (Tuesday) is the 3rd market day and we have a massive turnout.
“The market is on a 5-day interval, and people are appealing that we should reduce those days, but we are still looking forward to that,” Molasan said.
