The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, says it will hold an economic and housing summit as part of broader efforts to promote wealth creation, home ownership and economic empowerment among Ndigbo.
President Ohanaeze Ndigbo FCT chapter, Chief Andrew Ugwu, said this during a news conference in Abuja on Thursday while unveiling the organisation’s programmes for the remaining part of the year.
Ugwu said the summit, scheduled for first week of December at the Transcorp Hilton, would bring together policymakers, financial institutions, real estate developers, investors and key stakeholders.
According to him, the organisation will explore solutions to economic and housing challenges facing its members in FCT and beyond.
He said discussions at the summit would focus on investment opportunities, wealth sustainability, mortgage accessibility, diaspora housing schemes and sustainable urban development.
He said the initiative was aimed at creating pathways to economic prosperity and home ownership for Ndigbo resident in the Federal Capital Territory.
“Our goal is to ensure that no Igbo man or woman in the FCT is without a pathway to home ownership or economic dignity,” he said.
The Ohanaeze president also announced that the organisation would unveil the Ohanaeze Cooperative Society during the 2026 Igbo Day slated for September 29.
He explained that it would serve as an economic platform to mobilise resources, provide accessible credit facilities and support investments in agriculture, trade, real estate and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
“The cooperative embodies our resolve to move from cultural celebration to tangible economic empowerment for every Igbo son and daughter in the FCT,” he stated.
“The annual Igbo Day celebration will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people through traditional music, dance, cuisine, arts, exhibitions and discussions centred on unity and community development.
To ensure the successful execution of the programmes, he inaugurated a projects committee under the leadership of Mrs Ginika Tor, with Chief Favour Odeta serving as secretary.
Tor thanked the leadership for the confidence reposed on the team and expressed optimism that the 2026 Igbo Day would be a resounding success.
She further said that while the South-East indigenes would be prioritised, the initiatives may later be extended to other residents of the nation’s capital.
“We are prioritising South-East indigenes, but the benefits will extend to other FCT residents,” she said.
Another member of the committee, Mrs Becky Okoroafor, also pledged her commitment to the group, saying that she was ready to make sacrifices for the Igbo community in Abuja.
