The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has issued a direct challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide a transparent account of how his administration has spent the reported ₦15.8 trillion saved from fuel subsidy removal alongside more than $100 billion accumulated in national borrowings.

In an open statement titled “Good Day, Mr. President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability,” published on his official social media platforms on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the former Anambra State governor stated that citizens require clear evidence showing how these substantial fiscal resources, increased tax collections, and revenues have directly improved living standards across the country.

Obi’s intervention came shortly after President Tinubu addressed an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where the President made critical remarks regarding Obi’s past governance record in Anambra State.

Responding to the political broadside, Obi urged the President to use his official visits to engage directly with citizens on pressing socio-economic outcomes rather than dwelling on past political rivalries.

In the detailed statement, Obi pressed the federal executive for concrete data regarding the impact of its fiscal measures. He called for specific disclosures on the exact number of Nigerians successfully lifted out of poverty since the termination of the petrol subsidy, the reduction in the out-of-school children population, and the status of functional primary healthcare facilities delivered under the administration.

Furthermore, the NDC candidate questioned the administration’s performance in the power sector, recalling President Tinubu’s prior campaign commitments on electricity restoration, and demanded an account of security strategies deployed to combat persistent terrorism and internal security threats.

Obi reiterated that transparent fiscal management and measurable human welfare indicators remain the fundamental responsibilities of public office holders.
