The Nigerian Army has successfully recovered and fully restored administrative control over its official X handle, @HQNigerianArmy on Sunday, November 8, 2026, following an attempted cybersecurity breach in late August.

The recovery marks the resolution of an extensive security operation initiated when military cyber experts first detected unauthorised access attempts on the handle at approximately 5:00 PM WAT on August 29.

Following the initial detection, malicious actors briefly compromised the platform, prompting technical containment teams to isolate the incident, secure official communications, and mitigate unauthorized manipulation.

During the period of compromise, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, reassured the public that technical protocols were immediately deployed to address the breach.

The Army Directorate of Public Relations temporarily advised news organizations and members of the public to rely on alternative official channels, including its secondary handle, @nigerianarmyinfo, as well as verified Facebook and Instagram pages, while recovery operations proceeded.

In an official statement issued from Army Headquarters in Abuja, military authorities confirmed that complete management of the primary handle has been re-established and verified. Authorities expressed appreciation to the public and media stakeholders for their patience and understanding throughout the technical restoration process.

With @HQNigerianArmy now fully operational and secured, the Nigerian Army has resumed publishing direct operational updates, counter-insurgency briefings, and official defence announcements exclusively through its primary verified channel.
