The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos Command, on Monday shut down an illegal fruit juice production factory in Badagry and arrested two female suspects.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Mr Adedotun Keshinro said the factory, known as Barkas Juice, was located on Alabi Onilegbale Street, Aradagun, Badagry.
Keshinro represented by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SC Oluwaseun Abolurin, said the factory was discovered on Saturday, Sept. 19, following credible intelligence received by the command.
“Upon arrival at the location, operatives discovered a facility being used for the production and packaging of juice products under questionable and unhygienic conditions.
“The condition of the production environment was highly unhygienic and unsuitable for a facility involved in the production of consumable products.
“Various materials associated with the production and packaging of the juice were found within the premises, while two female suspects, aged 48 and 50, were arrested,” he said.
Keshinro attributed the success of the operation to the efforts of the Badagry Divisional Officer, CSC Gbenga Ekunola, his team and cordial engagement with the community.
He said preliminary investigation indicated that products manufactured at the facility were distributed beyond Badagry to markets as far as Benin City, Edo.
He, however, said further investigation was required to establish the distribution network, quantity produced and specific markets and distributors involved.
The commandant said the chemicals and other materials used in the production process could pose serious health risks, particularly amid concerns over kidney-related illnesses.
He alleged that preliminary investigation showed that the fake juice contained high levels of sugar, water, colourants, dyes and additives, without real fruit content.
According to him, consumption of such products could have serious health consequences, including Type 2 diabetes and liver and kidney problems.
He also alleged that the production, sale and distribution of the juice were carried out in an unhygienic environment using a purported fake NAFDAC registration number, 01-2166L.
Keshinro urged members of the public to carefully check product labels and purchase consumables from credible and reputable outlets.
He said the NSCDC would continue to clamp down on activities capable of endangering public health and safety.
The commandant added that the suspects would undergo further investigation and be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
