The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has formally demanded the immediate resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, declaring that the embattled administrator no longer possesses the institutional trust required to lead global football.
The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) escalated the growing crisis surrounding world football’s governing body on Friday, August 7, 2026, becoming the first national association to directly demand the immediate resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Speaking on Friday following an emergency review during the NFF’s monthly board meeting in Oslo on Thursday evening, NFF President Lise Klaveness stated that Infantino’s leadership had reached a point of irrecoverable breakdown.
“He does not have the institutional trust required to lead FIFA in a stable manner in the current climate. There is no turning back for Gianni Infantino,” Klaveness told reporters. “We decided that there is no trust in Infantino now… The international football cooperation is very much in chaos, and we will ask him to resign immediately so that the global football community can look ahead.”
The ultimatum follows intense fallout from Infantino’s controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative. Unveiled late last month, the plan aimed to create a commercial subsidiary valued at $20 billion to manage the commercial rights for the World Cup and other major tournaments, offering up to a 20% stake to private equity investors.
Despite FIFA withdrawing the proposal and issuing an official apology on Wednesday, August 5, the backlash has continued to intensify. European football’s governing body reiterated Thursday that conditions for lifting its proposed boycott of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup had not been met, citing a total loss of confidence in Infantino’s executive governance.
Major European bodies, including the English Football Association, have formally withdrawn their endorsement for Infantino ahead of the upcoming FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027.
The NFF’s stance marks the culmination of a multi-year effort by Klaveness, a 45-year-old lawyer and former Norwegian international player, to push for transparency and human rights reform within FIFA.
Since taking office in March 2022, Klaveness has been one of Infantino’s most vocal opponents on the international stage.
While media speculation has linked Klaveness to a potential bid for the FIFA presidency, she dismissed claims that she would run: “I register that my name is mentioned, but that is not a theme at all. We have no reason to comment on any candidacy, nor are we ready for it. Our sole priority is restoring stability alongside UEFA.”
The NFF confirmed it will formally submit a letter to FIFA headquarters in Zurich during the coming week requesting Infantino’s resignation.
