Mrs Abisayo Busari-Akinnadeju, a former presidential aspirant of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), has said Nigeria cannot survive its current challenges without citizens holding leaders accountable and fulfilling their civic responsibilities.
Busari-Akinnadeju said this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Akure. She said national renewal required citizens to reject wrongdoing, demand transparency and refuse to excuse failure, adding that rebuilding Nigeria must begin with accountability at both the family and national levels.
According to her, holding leaders accountable does not mean insulting them but asking questions, voting with conscience and rejecting violence, incompetence and sentiments based on ethnicity, religion or political affiliation. She stressed that accountability should become a national culture embraced in government, homes, schools, places of worship, businesses and communities.
The former presidential aspirant also urged Nigerian women to take a leading role in nation-building, saying they possess enormous influence in shaping the country’s moral values. She noted that mothers, wives and sisters who promote honesty, reject violence and discourage fraud contribute significantly to national security and public integrity.
She maintained that the values taught in homes ultimately shape the character of the nation, urging Nigerians to begin rebuilding the country by instilling integrity, responsibility and accountability in future generations.
