The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a fresh warning to outbound Nigerian travelers against carrying unsolicited parcels, following the interception of a drug shipment cleverly concealed inside a keg of palm oil bound for Saudi Arabia.

The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy, revealed details of the operation on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Operatives intercepted a female traveler at the airport who had been entrusted with the consignment by an acquaintance to deliver to a third party in the Middle Eastern nation.

Routine screening by NDLEA officers uncovered the illicit narcotics submerged within the dense liquid, thwarting what could have resulted in capital punishment for the carrier under Saudi Arabia’s strict anti-narcotics laws.

Reiterating the agency’s stance on personal vigilance, Babafemi emphasized the severe dangers of transporting packages on behalf of others, regardless of familiarity or social ties.

”We’ll never be tired of repeating this warning: Never accept any parcel or luggage from anyone or on behalf of anyone, no matter how close you are!” Babafemi stated. “She’ll have been counting her days on earth by now if this was discovered in Saudi.”

He urged travelers to prioritise personal safety over social etiquette or fear of straining relationships;”Choose to offend the person than go to jail. BE WISE!” he added.

Refuse to haul sealed containers, local foodstuffs, or personal items without independently inspecting the contents. Citizens are advised to share these cautionary measures with family and friends to prevent unsuspecting travelers from becoming mules for drug syndicates.
