The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the reported obstruction of its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, from accessing Yelwata community in Benue State to visit victims of recent killings. The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy on Tuesday and prevented him from entering the community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the group blocking the convoy was led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia. The party described the incident as troubling, saying Obi’s planned visit was aimed at mourning with affected families, expressing solidarity and listening to victims of the violence.
According to the statement, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting families affected by the killings in Yelwata. He said his convoy was stopped from proceeding to the community by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back”, Obi maintained that his visit was not politically motivated but was intended to enable him sympathise with families who had lost loved ones and offer solidarity during the difficult period.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” Obi was quoted as saying.
The NDC said residents of Benue and Nigerians deserved to live peacefully, travel safely and farm their lands without fear, while calling on the state government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and identify those responsible.
The party also urged the authorities to ensure the safety of citizens and leaders visiting communities affected by violence. It said that despite being denied access to Yelwata, its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the wider community.
The NDC further reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians across the country.
