Oyo State Governor and Presidential Candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of elder statesman, former Governor of old Gongola State, and ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing him as a “national icon” who gave his all to Nigeria.

The condolence message was officially released on Saturday evening, September 12, 2026, through a statement signed by Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Anthony Ehilebo, and issued from the Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Secretariat in Abuja.

Addressing the nation on behalf of the presidential campaign, Ehilebo conveyed Governor Makinde’s sentiments, noting that the country had lost an “awe-inspiring personality and leader” who left an indelible imprint on the nation’s political, economic, and democratic growth. Alhaji Tukur passed away at the age of 90 following a prolonged illness.

”Alhaji Tukur stood tall as an awe-inspiring personality and leader… a national icon and global torchbearer who bestrode the business and political worlds like a colossus,” Makinde stated. “He played indelible roles and made immeasurable legacy contributions, dedicating his intellect, expertise, personal resources, and energy to the unity, stability, and economic and democratic development of our dear nation.”

Reflecting on Tukur’s expansive career, which encompassed roles as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Governor of old Gongola State, Minister of Industries, Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, and PDP National Chairman, Makinde celebrated him as an “undefeated optimist” who consistently offered practical solutions to complex national challenges.

The APM presidential candidate lamented that Tukur’s transition comes at a critical juncture in the nation’s political journey, when his guidance and elder wisdom are most needed, while offering prayers for the Tukur family and the government and people of Adamawa State.

Concluding his tribute, Makinde prayed that Almighty Allah grant the late leader Aljannah Firdaus and give the grieving family the fortitude to endure the loss.
