(Arise) – In a bid to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President Bukola Saraki are spearheading a nationwide effort to rally Nigeria’s opposition forces. The initiative seeks to establish a unified political coalition, provisionally titled the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), with a formal announcement scheduled for May 30.
Atiku recently visited Osun State to consult with former governor and estranged Tinubu ally, Rauf Aregbesola. In a video shared online, Atiku was warmly received, fueling speculation that key figures disillusioned with the current government are aligning behind the new coalition.
Saraki, on his part, led a delegation to Enugu to meet with Governor Peter Mbah. The closed-door meeting is believed to have addressed growing tensions within the PDP, especially concerns from the South-East over the recent appointment of Udeh Okoye as National Secretary. There are indications that the region may reconsider its loyalty to the PDP unless its interests are respected.
Meanwhile, another bloc within the opposition, led by former Kaduna State governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, is advocating for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the coalition’s platform. “I believe very strongly that the SDP provides the potential to recreate a major political party,” El-Rufai told journalists in Kaduna. “With the support of some of the opposition groups, we will not get all. But most importantly, the people of Nigeria need a credible alternative”
However, this position is not without resistance. Members of the Atiku-Saraki-led coalition are wary of joining an existing party, citing past issues such as the leadership crisis that crippled the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). According to Dr. Umar Ardo, secretary of the committee led by former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, “The coalition is seeking an entirely new party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), with the aim of bringing something new, something that is not in any way tainted with the impunity of existing political parties.”

The document states that the ADA is intended to be more than just a political party; it’s envisioned as a national movement focused on democratic ideals, justice, and strong leadership. The ADA aims to provide a reliable, citizen-focused alternative to current political parties by uniting opposition groups and individuals to restore trust and shared goals.
