The Federal Government of Nigeria is finalizing arrangements to evacuate and safely repatriate over 1,000 Nigerian citizens currently residing in South Africa.
​The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) confirmed the upcoming exercise, noting that the initiative is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the welfare, safety, and dignity of its citizens abroad who face documented vulnerabilities or wish to voluntarily return home.
​According to statement briefs from NIDCOM, the repatriation process is being executed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, and key international migration partners.
​The commission emphasized that thorough profiling and documentation are currently being conducted to ensure a seamless, organized transition.
​”The safety of our people remains a top priority for the administration. We are working around the clock with relevant stakeholders to ensure that these citizens are brought back in an orderly manner and successfully reintegrated into society,” a NIDCOM representative stated.
​To prevent a bumpy transition, the Federal Government is reportedly aligning with local agencies and non-governmental organizations to establish a robust post-arrival framework.
Returning citizens are expected to receive Immediate psychosocial support to help cope with the transition. They will undergo skill acquisition and vocational training opportunities to facilitate economic independence.
Returning citizens will be given logistical support to help them safely reunite with their families across various states in Nigeria.
​While NIDCOM has not yet made the specific operational timeline public, officials have assured that the logistics are in advanced stages, and further updates regarding arrival batches will be communicated in due course.
