The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has strongly condemned reported violent attacks targeting coordinators and members of the party as well as the Obidient Movement in Delta State.

Obi voiced his condemnation in a official statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, November 7, 2026, describing political intimidation and violence as completely unacceptable in a civilized democracy.

Tension reportedly escalated on Saturday morning in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, when suspected political thugs launched an unprovoked assault on NDC supporters holding a peaceful rally.

According to Engineer Thompson Omoneje, an NDC coordinator in Delta State, the peaceful procession was disrupted by attackers dressed in black who arrived at the venue in commercial tricycles (Keke Napep).

Omoneje alleged that the assailants accosted rally participants near the COMATOA area of Asaba, physically assaulting members and severely damaging campaign vehicles by smashing windscreens and side panels.

Reacting swiftly to the reports, Peter Obi called on the Delta State Government and law enforcement agencies to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, insisting that perpetrators must be identified and prosecuted regardless of their political standing.

”No political ambition is worth the life of any Nigerian,” Obi stated. “It is particularly troubling that at a time when Nigeria urgently needs responsible leadership, some individuals continue to believe political influence can be secured through thuggery, fear, and violence.”

Obi emphasized that political authority must be earned through persuasion and public trust, not through coercion or intimidating political opponents.

Despite the intimidation, Obi assured supporters that neither the NDC nor the Obidient Movement would retreat from democratic participation or resort to retaliation.

”We will not be intimidated or silenced, nor will we relinquish our democratic space to violence. Our response will remain peaceful, lawful, and determined,” Obi affirmed, reiterating that a “New Nigeria” must be built on justice, liberty, and respect for human dignity.
