The battle for the Lagos State governorship in 2027 has taken a decisive turn following the formal endorsement of Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The endorsement, announced on Monday after a high-level closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, signals an early consolidation of political forces around Hamzat as the ruling establishment begins to shape succession plans ahead of the next general elections.

Hamzat had earlier declared his intention to contest the governorship before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders, positioning himself as the leading figure in the push for continuity within the current administration.

The meeting was attended by influential members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, underscoring the weight of political backing behind the deputy governor’s ambition.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a consensus decision, portraying Hamzat as a competent and experienced leader ready to take over the reins of governance.

“We have just received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders to formally inform us of his intention to run. It was unanimous among all of us that he is fit and well-prepared for this responsibility,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu praised Hamzat’s performance over the past seven years, citing his integrity, loyalty, and deep understanding of governance as critical strengths.

“He has worked at the highest level of commitment and support. I feel honoured that he considers it important to inform us and seek our backing,” he added.

The governor also acknowledged the role of Bola Tinubu in shaping both his political journey and that of his deputy, describing the President as instrumental in their emergence and partnership.

“We must thank our leader, Mr President, whose vision continues to manifest in what we are seeing today,” he said.

Reinforcing his endorsement, Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as a leader who has long been prepared for the top job.

“This is a deputy governor who has been ready from day one. He has been built for this role, and we believe he deserves the opportunity to lead this state,” he stated.

He further characterised the meeting as a broad consultative process involving party leaders and government officials, noting that the decision reflected a shared position among stakeholders.

“It was a warm, family-style engagement, and at the end, it was clear to everyone that he is ready, capable, and well-prepared for the task ahead,” the governor said.
