The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has unveiled a statewide essay competition for students in secondary and tertiary institutions, with a total prize pool of ₦2.8 million, as part of efforts to promote civic engagement, democratic participation and youth involvement in governance.
The initiative, which was officially launched on Thursday at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia, is expected to provide a platform for young people across the state to contribute fresh ideas and practical policy recommendations that could support sustainable development in Abia.
Speaking during the launch, the state secretary of the Labour Party, Chuks Akamadu, described the competition as a landmark initiative and the first of its kind to be organised by the Abia chapter of the party.
According to him, the programme reflects the party’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders by encouraging critical thinking, intellectual excellence and responsible citizenship among students.
Akamadu said the essay competition goes beyond rewarding academic brilliance, noting that it is designed to inspire young people to actively participate in conversations on governance, public policy and the future of the state.
He explained that the Labour Party believes the youth possess innovative ideas capable of transforming society if they are given the opportunity to express themselves and engage constructively with public institutions.
“The competition aligns with the Labour Party’s commitment to promoting equal opportunity, social justice, civic education, and responsible political participation.
“The exercise seeks to stimulate intellectual engagement among young Abians while generating practical ideas and policy recommendations that could contribute to governance and development,” he said.
The party secretary noted that young people represent a significant segment of the state’s population and should not be viewed merely as voters but as partners in governance whose opinions and ideas deserve attention.
He added that the competition would encourage participants to examine contemporary issues affecting the state, develop creative solutions and deepen their understanding of democratic principles and civic responsibility.
According to Akamadu, the initiative also seeks to strengthen political awareness among students while fostering a culture of constructive dialogue on issues of public interest.
He said the essays submitted during the competition would not only be assessed for academic merit but would also serve as valuable contributions that policymakers could draw from in addressing developmental challenges facing the state.
The Labour Party maintained that education remains one of the strongest tools for social transformation and that empowering students intellectually would help prepare them for leadership roles in the future.
Akamadu further stated that the competition aligns with the party’s broader vision of building an inclusive society where young people are encouraged to participate actively in decision-making processes rather than remaining passive observers.
He urged students from both secondary schools and higher institutions across Abia State to seize the opportunity by participating in the competition, describing it as a chance to showcase their talents while contributing meaningfully to the development of their communities.
The ₦2.8 million prize fund, he noted, is intended not only to reward outstanding essays but also to motivate students to embrace research, innovation and public service.
He expressed confidence that the competition would attract quality entries from across the state and produce ideas capable of influencing discussions on governance, education, economic development and social progress.
Party officials present at the launch described the initiative as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic culture through civic education and youth empowerment, stressing that meaningful development can only be achieved when citizens, particularly young people, are actively involved in shaping public policy.
They also encouraged educational institutions, parents and community leaders to support the initiative by motivating students to participate and develop a deeper interest in governance and nation-building.
The Labour Party expressed optimism that the essay competition would become an annual event, providing a sustainable platform for discovering young talents, encouraging policy-oriented thinking and fostering a generation of informed, responsible and engaged citizens committed to the continued development of Abia State and Nigeria as a whole.
