A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, has distanced himself from media reports claiming that he is the Labour Party candidate in the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
In a statement released on Tuesday via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Moghalu expressed distress over the circulation of several false publications—some of which included his photograph—wrongly identifying him as the party’s flagbearer.
The economist and former presidential candidate described the reports as “entirely untrue and misleading,” clarifying that he is not a member of the Labour Party and has made no declaration or involvement in the upcoming Anambra governorship race.
“I have become aware of misleading online reports naming me as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Anambra State. This claim is completely false. I am not, and have never been, a member of the Labour Party, nor am I contesting any election,” Moghalu stated.
He urged members of the public and the media to disregard the misinformation and verify political reports before publication to avoid misleading citizens and damaging reputations.
Moghalu, who served as Deputy Governor of the CBN between 2009 and 2014, was the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2019 general elections. He later announced his withdrawal from partisan politics to focus on policy advocacy and national development.
The false reports naming him as a Labour Party candidate have sparked confusion among some political observers, especially as the 2025 Anambra governorship race begins to draw national attention.
Political analysts say Moghalu’s swift clarification helps dispel growing speculation about his return to active politics, while also underscoring the need for responsible journalism in Nigeria’s charged political climate.
