North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has claimed an overwhelming victory in the country’s latest parliamentary elections, with official figures showing his ruling party secured 99.93 per cent of the vote.
According to reports cited by Yonhap News Agency, the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea and its allied groups won all 687 seats in the Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA), North Korea’s rubber-stamp legislature.
The election, held on March 15, recorded a turnout of 99.99 per cent, underscoring the highly controlled nature of the country’s political system.
Voting in North Korea typically involves a single candidate per seat, with citizens over the age of 17 required to either approve or reject the nominee put forward by the state.
Official results showed that all candidates received near-unanimous approval, with just 0.07 per cent of votes cast against them.
The newly elected deputies will form the 15th Supreme People’s Assembly, which is expected to convene soon in Pyongyang to formalise key leadership positions and potentially introduce constitutional amendments.
Analysts say the latest election reflects significant internal restructuring, with over 70 per cent of the assembly made up of new members. The shift is widely seen as an effort by Kim to consolidate power by replacing older elites with loyal allies.
