The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, that it has reached a staff-level agreement with Argentine authorities on the third review of the country’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program. The breakthrough paves the way for a disbursement of approximately $900 million (SDR 600 million) to bolster the South American nation’s economic stabilization strategy.

The formal announcement was published through Press Release No. 26/342 by the IMF Communications Department at the Fund’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., with press officer Jose Luis De Haro handling media inquiries on the release.

Subject to final approval by the IMF Executive Board, which is scheduled to convene for formal consideration in early December 2026, Argentina will gain immediate access to the $900 million tranche. Fund officials stated that disciplined macroeconomic management and market-oriented reform initiatives have continued to drive disinflation and strengthen Argentina’s external financial standing.

Notably, foreign currency reserve accumulation has exceeded the target thresholds set under the program.

The agreement centers on a balanced policy framework designed to preserve economic stability while supporting job creation, private investment, and sustained growth. Fiscal policy remains anchored to a primary surplus target of 1.4% of GDP for 2026, with an equivalent target planned for 2027 in alignment with the government’s budget submissions. Achieving these goals would mark four consecutive years of primary fiscal surpluses for the country.

On the monetary front, the Central Bank of Argentina intends to maintain its target framework for monetary aggregates within a flexible exchange rate band system. This strategy is designed to curb inflation while supporting further reserve accumulation.

Additionally, the agreed structural agenda highlights key priorities, including expanding domestic capital markets, advancing strategic infrastructure concessions, and furthering labor market reforms.

The 48-month Extended Fund Facility arrangement, originally approved in April 2025 with total access of $20 billion, provides essential backing for President Javier Milei’s structural economic reform program.

The arrangement focuses on fiscal consolidation, inflation reduction, central bank balance sheet repair, and a gradual return to international capital market access.
