Hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East collapsed late Thursday after Hezbollah officially rejected a U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal, triggering a violent surge in military operations and deadly new Israeli raids into southern Lebanon.

​The diplomatic momentum ground to a halt on Thursday, June 4, when Hezbollah’s Secretary General, Naim Qassem, delivered a defiant televised address. Qassem explicitly rejected the proposed truce, branding it a “capitulation” rather than a peace agreement.
