Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has publicly expressed his discontent with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun his directive to the CP Rivers State to withdraw all police personnel from involvement in tomorrow’s Rivers local government election.
Qustioningt the rationale behind the Police’s decision not to provide security for the election, Fubara pointed out that the court order specifically addressed the issue of the non-release of the voters’ register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, emphasizing that the ruling did not imply that election should not proceed.
“We have endured enough nonsense from this institution. Everyone knows about the court judgment. Even the so-called ruling—did it actually state that the elections should not take place? I find myself questioning the relationship between the IGP and the individual who seems to wield so much power in this state. In fact, we do not require your security; we will take it upon ourselves to ensure our own safety. This election will go ahead as planned, the results will be announced, and the elected officials will be sworn in,” he concluded.
