Frank Mill, former Germany international and a revered figure in the country’s 1990 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, has passed away at the age of 67, following complications from a heart attack suffered earlier this year. His death was confirmed on Tuesday by his former clubs, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen.
Mill, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career spanning nearly two decades, died in the early hours of Tuesday morning, following a prolonged 10-week battle with the aftermath of a cardiac arrest he suffered in May. The former striker collapsed moments after getting into a taxi at Milan Malpensa Airport, where he had arrived to participate in the filming of a documentary commemorating Germany’s historic World Cup triumph.
According to reports from German outlet Bild, Mill experienced a cardiac arrest at the airport and was without vital signs for several minutes before being resuscitated by emergency doctors. He was airlifted to a local hospital, where he was placed in an artificial coma as his condition stabilized. Eventually, Mill was allowed to return to his hometown of Essen to continue his recovery, but he tragically succumbed to the effects of the heart attack at approximately 2:30am on Tuesday.
Mill earned 17 caps for West Germany and was part of the legendary squad that lifted the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy under the leadership of Franz Beckenbauer. Although he didn’t feature in the tournament’s matches, his presence and contributions to the team’s journey are fondly remembered. Two years prior, Mill secured an Olympic bronze medal with West Germany at the 1988 Seoul Games, further cementing his place in the nation’s footballing history.
His professional career began at his hometown club Rot-Weiss Essen, where he made a name for himself with 90 goals in 165 appearances. In 1981, he joined Bundesliga giants Borussia Mönchengladbach, making over 150 appearances during a five-year stint. In 1986, Mill transferred to Borussia Dortmund, where he played for eight years and won the DFB-Pokal. He concluded his playing career with a two-year spell at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Mill’s technical skill, goalscoring ability, and unwavering professionalism made him a fan favorite and a respected figure across German football. Tributes have poured in from fans, former teammates, and clubs.

His boyhood club and local team, Rot-Weiss Essen, also posted a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter): “Rot-Weiss Essen mourns the loss of its former striker Frank Mill. The Essen native passed away in the night from Monday, 4 August, to Tuesday, 5 August, due to the consequences of a severe heart attack. He was only 67 years old.”

Mill’s passing marks another solemn moment for the 1990 World Cup squad, following the death of teammate Andreas Brehme earlier this year. Brehme famously scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina, sealing West Germany’s third World Cup title.
