A fierce power struggle within the opposition caucus in the House of Representatives erupted into open confrontation on Thursday, as lawmakers exchanged accusations of forgery, blackmail and political manipulation over the battle for the position of Minority Leader.

The heated session momentarily disrupted proceedings as lawmakers shouted across the chamber while tensions rose over allegations that signatures of some members were being used without authorisation to support particular candidates in the contest for the minority leadership.
The controversy began when the member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, Mr Philip Agbese, rose on a matter of personal privilege to accuse fellow lawmaker, Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere, of allegedly using his signature without consent in a nomination document purportedly endorsing Ugochinyere for the office of Minority Leader.
Agbese told lawmakers that he was shocked to discover a document circulating online bearing his name and signature among supporters of Ugochinyere’s ambition. According to him, he neither signed nor authorised anyone to append his signature to the document, insisting that the alleged action amounted to forgery and misrepresentation.
The Benue lawmaker said the circulation of the document had caused confusion among members and risked misleading the public about his political position in the ongoing leadership contest. He further alleged that some individuals within the opposition caucus were attempting to manipulate lawmakers and create a false impression of widespread support for certain aspirants through questionable tactics.
Agbese demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and urged the House leadership to protect the integrity of parliamentary processes. “This is a serious issue because my signature was allegedly used without my consent. I never signed any document endorsing anybody for Minority Leader,” he reportedly told the House during the tense session.
His remarks immediately triggered reactions from lawmakers across the opposition divide, with some members shouting in support while others openly challenged his claims. The chamber soon descended into a noisy exchange as rival camps traded accusations over the ongoing contest for leadership positions within the opposition caucus.
