The Federal Government has finalized plans to deploy 10,000 electric tricycles by August, marking a major step toward modernizing Nigeria’s public transport system and advancing cleaner energy solutions. ​
The initial fleet will be distributed by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for operation across the North-East region and beyond. ​Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the initiative at the Presidential Villa during a courtesy visit by the political support group, ‘The Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027.’
According to the Vice President, President Bola Tinubu has already approved the expansion of the green mobility initiative, directing other regional development commissions across Nigeria to replicate the program. ​Vice President Shettima emphasized that the transition to electric mobility is part of a broader vision to overhaul the nation’s fragmented transport framework.
Key pillars of the reform agenda include the nationwide rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, major infrastructure upgrades across Nigerian ports and creating a seamless logistics chain linking deep-sea ports, rail lines, waterways, airports, and local feeder roads.
​”Our vision is an unbroken logistics chain, where a container moves from a deep-sea port to a rail wagon, then to a CNG-powered truck, then to a trader in Ariaria Market or Maiduguri, without delay or policy failure,” Shettima stated.
​The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to supporting transport workers by pursuing policies that guarantee affordable energy, insurable vehicle fleets, sustainable contracts, and overall better working conditions.
